The accompanying parents' guide is designed to validate parents' feelings and give them ways to help their children cope. The text and illustrations encourage children to discuss their feelings and to draw their own pictures to express themselves. Based on many years of experience as a social worker, who has assisted military families experiencing stress, author Beth Andrews has created an excellent tool for allowing children and their loved ones to deal with the many emotions caused by deployment. This book is designed to help children especially, but also their parents, during such difficult times. Children often experience sadness, anger, fear, anxiety, and loneliness, and they do not understand their own feelings or know how to express them. One of the most challenging situations, both for children and parents, is when a father, mother, or sibling is deployed for military service and must be away from the home. Military families face stressful times that are unique to the military lifestyle.

There wasn't really much substance to their relationship at all. I thought there would be more of a love triangle, but it was clear that Justin was never a contender. I would have bought her happy medium if she had found herself becoming obsessed with her riches, but that didn't ever seem to be a concern. And I felt like the book was claiming that it's wrong to be rich or to enjoy nice things. Katherine is perfectly happy living in the mansion and using her wealth to help others until she suddenly turns around and decides she's NOT happy living that way, so she ditches the mansion and becomes Mennonite instead. I also was very unsatisfied with the ending. Why would he assume Daniel was referring to the impostor? It was too obviously just a way for Daniel to come frustratingly close to Katherine without a reunion actually taking place. I don't know why the butler wouldn't have any concept of the possibility that someone from Katherine's old life might try to contact her. For one thing, I hated how there was so much confusion over Daniel calling Katherine "Katie". I will say I was disappointed by this one. I was so confident I had read this book years ago, but nothing from it seemed at all familiar, so, for whatever reason, I must have stopped at the second book. Oh, and of course there are romances, trips to the Amalfi Coast and pregnant lesbian best friends thrown in the mix, too. The main themes in Lost Roses center around the intricacies of women’s lives, and this is manifested in how the author portrays the experiences of the three main characters in the book. In conclusion, I will summarize my overall impression of the book and whether I would recommend it to others. I will also discuss the book’s strengths and weaknesses, and how it compares to other works in its genre. In this recap, I will delve into the main themes and ideas presented in the book, along with a critical evaluation of the writing style and how effectively the author conveyed their message. Thus began the Roman life of Ariantes, a warrior-prince in a land not his own. Left with no choice, the Sarmatians complied. Perhaps the most well-known of these controversies has involved none other than Harry Potter author turned transphobic crusader herself, JK Rowling, whom Felker-Martin has proudly declared “dies in MANHUNT”. Since its announcement, Manhunt has been beset by a number of competing discourses by trans people, allies, and transphobes alike, all of whom have read any number of social issues into the book’s premise. In this way, Manhunt is a sort of meta-gendercide novel, examining the inherent cruelty of the genre and the biological essentialism it’s based on in bloody detail.Īnd that brings me to the novel’s controversies. Felker-Martin, a trans woman, handles her trans feminine characters with all the nuance you might expect, but she also offers a surprisingly complex view of the ways a testosterone-based apocalypse might affect trans men, pre-pubescent boys, and cis men and women who have atypical hormonal balances. While a common critique of gendercide novels is the relatively binary way that they handle sex and gender, Manhunt bucks the trend by delving deep into the messiness that its very concept creates. Vaughn and Pia Guerra’s Y: The Last Man and Naomi Alderman’s The Power, or even Margaret Atwood’s The Handmaid’s Tale. As a so-called “gendercide” novel-a genre in which one sex or gender, often but not always men, are killed, disappeared, or otherwise rendered powerless- Manhunt enters a crowded field, competing with entries such as Brian K. |
